The official teaser for Haiwaan has dropped, and it wastes no time establishing a dark, unsettling atmosphere. Directed by the master storyteller Priyadarshan, this Hindi remake of his own acclaimed 2016 Malayalam thriller Oppam reunites two of Bollywood’s most beloved stars — Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan — after nearly 18 years. The result? A taut, psychological cat-and-mouse thriller that promises intensity, suspense, and a striking role reversal.

A Teaser That Speaks in Shadows and Sound

The short, dialogue-free teaser leans heavily on mood. Shadows, silhouettes, and a haunting background score do the heavy lifting. We see Saif Ali Khan’s character navigating dimly lit spaces with a cane — a blind man whose heightened senses pick up on danger. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar’s presence looms large: a silhouette pressing against glass, a chilling laugh, an air of calculated menace. Quick cuts of bloodied hands, misty waterfronts, flickering flames, and scattered papers build a sense of relentless pursuit and obsession.

The central question hangs in the air: Hero ya Haiwaan? (Hero or Beast?). Fans have already zeroed in on Akshay’s intense walk, the peak BGM, and his full-throttle villain energy — a mode many say he should explore more often. The teaser doesn’t spoil the plot, but it makes one thing clear: this is no light-hearted reunion. It’s a dark, atmospheric thriller.

The Story at Its Core

Haiwaan (literally “Monster” or “Beast”) follows a visually impaired caretaker who becomes entangled in a murder mystery. He must protect a young girl while proving his innocence against a cold-blooded antagonist. Saif steps into the role originally played by Mohanlal in Oppam — a character who, despite his blindness, possesses sharp instincts and quiet strength (sometimes compared to a “blind samurai”). Akshay plays the ruthless “psycho” antagonist, a departure from his usual heroic or comic personas and a role Priyadarshan has described as purely dangerous rather than grey.

This marks a significant shift for the Akshay-Priyadarshan partnership, which has delivered comedy classics like Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Here, the tone is pure suspense and psychological tension.

Star Power and Chemistry Rekindled

Akshay and Saif last shared the screen in Tashan (2008). Their earlier collaborations (Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Yeh Dillagi, Tu Chor Main Sipahi, and others) built a fan-favourite jodi rooted in easy chemistry and fun. This time, that chemistry turns darker and more dangerous. Saif has spoken warmly of Akshay as an “elder brother,” while praising the excitement of seeing him in a rare negative role. Priyadarshan, meanwhile, has noted Saif’s natural grasp of the blind character with minimal instruction and Akshay’s complete trust in the process.

The ensemble adds further depth: Boman Irani, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Saiyami Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Sharib Hashmi, Rajesh Sharma, Manoj Joshi, and others. Mohanlal is expected to make a special cameo, adding a nice full-circle touch for fans of the original.

The Creative Team Behind the Thriller

  • Director & Co-Writer: Priyadarshan (with Abilash Nair and Rohan Shankar)
  • Music: Pritam (songs) and Ronnie Raphael (background score)
  • Cinematography: Divakar Mani
  • Production Design: Sabu Cyril
  • Producers: Venkat K. Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn (KVN Productions and Thespian Films)
  • Release Date: 11 September 2026

Shot across Kochi, Vagamon, Ooty, and Mumbai, the film wrapped principal photography in late 2025. The makers have kept the full plot tightly under wraps, focusing instead on building anticipation through first-look posters and this atmospheric teaser.

Why Haiwaan Feels Like Event Cinema

Beyond the star reunion, Haiwaan represents a welcome genre pivot. Priyadarshan returns to the thriller space that earned Oppam critical praise, while Akshay steps into villain territory with visible commitment. Saif gets a layered, physically and emotionally demanding role that allows him to showcase restraint and intensity. The combination of a proven director, two major stars in unfamiliar territory, and a strong source material creates genuine curiosity.

Early audience reactions to the teaser highlight the BGM, Akshay’s menacing energy, and the promise of a proper edge-of-the-seat experience. For fans who have waited nearly two decades to see Akshay and Saif together again, Haiwaan delivers something fresher and darker than their previous outings.

Mark your calendars for 11 September 2026. One obsession. One relentless pursuit. The question remains: when the lights go down, will we root for the hero… or be captivated by the haiwaan?

The beast is coming.
